Charset in HTML with Examples
In this article, I am going to discuss Charset in HTML with Examples. Please read our previous article where we discussed Symbols in HTML with Examples.
HTML Charset
HTML Charset is also known as HTML Character Sets or HTML Encoding. After analyzing the character set of a web page, the browser displays it. The default charset in Html is UTF-8, which provides a broad range of symbols, characters, and entities. As a result, it is important to define an appropriate character set so that the browser can display information correctly.
If we want to display characters on an HTML page, we must specify the character set inside the HTML document’s head. This will help the browser in understanding that we are using a character set.
<meta charset=”UTF-8″>
The ASCII Character Set
ASCII defined 128 characters that can be used on the web, including digits (0-9) and English letters (A-Z), as well as certain unique characters such as ! @ $ + – () <>.
- ASCII employs control characters with values ranging from 0 to 31 (and 127).
- For letters, numbers, and symbols, ASCII employs values ranging from 32 to 126.
- The numbers 128 to 255 are not used in ASCII.
The ANSI Character Set
The initial Windows character set was ANSI (Windows-1252). The only difference between ANSI and ISO-8859-1 is that ANSI includes 32 additional characters.
- For numbers 0 to 127, ANSI is equivalent to ASCII.
- ANSI provides a unique set of characters for numbers ranging from 128 to 159.
- For numbers between 160 and 255, ANSI is equivalent to UTF-8.
The ISO-8859-1 Character Set
HTML 4’s default character set was ISO-8859-1. This character set supported a total of 256 distinct character codes. UTF-8 was also supported in HTML 4.
- For numbers 0 to 127, ISO-8859-1 is equivalent to ASCII.
- The numbers 128 to 159 are not used in ISO-8859-1.
- For values between 160 and 255, ISO-8859-1 is equivalent to UTF-8.
The UTF-8 Character Set
The HTML5 specification recommends web developers use the UTF-8 character set, which contains almost all of the world’s characters and symbols.
- For numbers 0 to 127, UTF-8 is equivalent to ASCII.
- The numbers 128 to 159 are not used by UTF-8.
- For values from 160 to 255, UTF-8 is equivalent to both ANSI and 8859-1.
- UTF-8 continues to expand after 256 and includes almost ten thousand different characters.
